We know it’s hard to believe, but the lazy days of summer are coming to a close. Whether your child spent the last few months at camp, traveling, or just enjoying some well-earned downtime, it can be a big adjustment to shift back into “school mode.”
But don’t worry—you don’t have to flip the switch overnight. With a little help, your child can ease back into a healthy, productive routine that sets them up for success this school year. And the best part? You can do it all from home!
Here are some simple, affordable (and even fun!) ways to help your child get ready to learn again:
📚 1. Bring Back the Books
Reading for fun is one of the best ways to re-engage your child’s brain and imagination. Whether it's picture books, graphic novels, or chapter books, just 20 minutes a day makes a big difference.
Create a little reading nook at home
Take turns reading aloud or have an older sibling join in
Don’t stress over what they’re reading—just make it enjoyable!
📝 Bonus Tip: Swing by your local library or ask us about free books at our next supply event.
🧠 2. Brain Warm-Ups
Think of it like stretching before a big game—kids’ minds need warm-ups too!
Use practice workbooks (you can find great ones at dollar stores or ask us for free resources!)
Try free online games focused on math or spelling
Make it playful—use flashcards, board games, or scavenger hunts with learning twists
Even 10–15 minutes a day can help kids feel more confident when school starts.
💪 3. Get Moving!
Physical activity helps children focus, reduce stress, and sleep better—three things every student needs. You don’t need a gym to make it happen!
Go for walks or bike rides as a family
Turn on music and dance together
Try kid-friendly yoga or stretching in the morning
Making movement a part of daily routine sets the tone for those active school days ahead.
🕒 4. Rebuild Routine (Gently)
The shift from summer freedom to school structure can be rough. Start small:
Move bedtimes 10–15 minutes earlier each night
Reintroduce consistent mealtimes and screen limits
Create a morning “practice run” the week before school starts
A little planning now means fewer tears (from everyone!) later.
🧩 5. Keep Minds Curious
Let curiosity lead the way! Try simple activities like:
Cooking together (hello, math and reading skills!)
Exploring nature with a notebook and crayons
Asking your child open-ended questions like, “What was your favorite part of today?”
Even casual conversations build critical thinking and emotional readiness.
